I’m going to get right to the point here! Stop stopping yourself. Enough with the daydreaming. You know you want that dream career, but are you taking steps to actually pursue it or not?

If you aren’t taking actions toward what you want yet, then I need to tell you that there’s no better time than the present to start the process. It doesn’t require a bold gesture like storming off your current job and quitting tomorrow, but it does require getting in the right mindset and doing things to help yourself.

Here are 5 things you can start doing today that will get you moving in the right direction:

Find the Right Mentor

If you don’t have a mentor yet, let me assure you how valuable this relationship can be. If you do have a mentor, are they the right one? Find a mentor that understands where you want to go, not just where you’ve been or where you are now. This is key. Align yourself to a person that inspires you to create your ideal life and career. And remember that successful people often have several different mentors, so don’t be afraid to start building your own “team”.

Surround Yourself With Like Minded People

Stop hanging out with people that don’t have similar passions and desires as you! I’m not saying all your friends and colleagues need to have the same goals or be in the same career field, but if you’re spending time with negative people that simply don’t care about personal growth or achieving career goals then you’re with the wrong crowd. Create new friendships with likeminded people and just watch how things unfold!

Try Things You Never Thought You Would

When looking for change in any area of your life, particularly a career change, you need to be open to new things. Say yes to things you never thought you would, or things you aren’t sure you’ll enjoy. These opportunities just might be the things that opens a new door for you, creates a new networking experience or expose you to a specific type of work that you end up loving.

Invest in yourself

Sometimes you have to spend money to make money. That can come in the form of furthering your education, attending seminars or conferences that interest you, arranging lunch dates with people whose brain you want to pick, or my favorite...hiring a professional career coach to help you get clear on what you want to do! Whatever you chose, remember that investing in yourself is a very good idea and you’re worth it.

Don’t Quit

Seriously, don’t stop going after what you want. You have unique gifts and talents and you deserve to do work that is meaningful to you. If you have a dream career in mind or you have a “gut feeling” that you’re meant to do more with your life than don’t ever, EVER stop going after it. Once you finally figure it out or find what you’ve been searching for you’ll be glad you kept at it.
