Put Your Ass Where Your Heart Wants to Be

I recently became aware of an author whose work I have come to admire, Steven Pressfield. You may know some of Steven Pressfield’s books. They include, The Legend of Bagger Vance, The Lion’s Gate, Gates of Fire, and the one that recently captivated my interest, The War of Art, among several others.

In his book, The War of Art, Steven Pressfield speaks about the challenges that all of us face when we are trying to create or achieve the things we want most. The feelings of self-doubt, procrastination, fear, perfectionism, and all the other forms of self-sabotage that stop us from doing our work and realizing our dreams. He refers to these feelings as Resistance.

Recently I heard this author speaking on a variety of television shows and podcasts, it was like all at once I knew of him and once I did I was seeing him everywhere. (Isn’t it strange when that happens!)

Of all the things I heard and read from this author, there was one thing that hit me like a Mac truck and has stuck with me for several weeks, and likely will for much, much longer.

A quote from Steven Pressfield, “Put your ass where your heart wants to be.”

This one sentence rung so true for me that I can’t seem to shake it. It’s been a constant reminder to get moving in the direction of my goals, even when I am procrastinating, making excuses (real or fake), or just plain feeling like I can’t do it. So much so, that I wanted to share it with you.

If you are like me and have an idea in your head or a dream in your heart, but sometimes find every reason in the world not to do the work needed to realize that dream, then I think you need to remember this one simple sentence… Put your ass where your heart wants to be.

It simply means, do the work.

If you feel called to be a writer in your heart, get your ass in front of the laptop and start writing. If you’ve been dreaming about starting a business, get going on making calls, producing your product, or doing whatever else you need to do to get the ball rolling. If you’re sick and tired of your crappy job and your heart is yearning for a change, then get your ass out there and start looking for a new job!

No matter what it is that you most want, you have to actually do something to make it happen. Wishing and wanting doesn’t make things happen. Action does.

I highly recommend you read Steven Pressfield’s book, The War of Art, if you’re in need of further inspiration to start doing what it is your heart is aching to do.
