What’s Wonder Woman Got to do With Your Business?

What’s Wonder Woman got to do with your business? If you ask me...everything!

I was one of the millions of fans eagerly looking forward to this weekend’s box office release of Warner Bros., Wonder Woman. And despite having an incredibly busy weekend I managed to fit in a little me time and took a solo trip to the theater to catch the film!

Yes, a shameless, make-up free, hair in a messy top knot, comfy sweater wearing, giant bucket of popcorn eating solo trip to the movies! I didn’t even pretend to be waiting for a friend or bury my face in my phone until the movie started. I was there to see Wonder Woman alone and I owned it!

There was a quote from the movie that struck me. Actually it’s “the” quote, I suppose, the theme and plot all wrapped up into one line and I can’t get it out of my head…

"It's not about what you deserve, it's about what you believe. And I believe in love."

I couldn’t help think of this quote as it relates to business. So many people that I’ve worked with have the common belief that they “deserve” more for themselves. They “deserve” more money or the big break they have been waiting for, or better clients, or any other thing you want to fill in the blank with, including, in the case of Wonder Woman, love.

But is being deserving enough? In my humble opinion, no, it’s not.

I would argue that most people are deserving of all the things they want out of life or their work. That good people with good intentions deserve whatever it is they wish for. Sometimes life or business doesn’t seem fair and it makes no sense to see deserving people fall on hard times or struggle to get ahead. But as Wonder Woman so beautifully says, “It’s not about what you deserve, it’s about what you believe.”

So what should you do when you've grown tired of waiting around for what you “deserve” to fall into your lap?

Ditch the idea that you deserve or are owed success and start believing you have what it takes to earn it!

True belief is so strong that no failure or setback will have the power to completely stop you in your tracks. Just look at Wonder Woman if you need proof :) Belief in yourself and your business is the only way to persevere when things get tough.

Here are a few reasons why believing in your business or idea REALLY matters!

If you don’t, who will?

There are plenty of people out there just waiting to knock you over and kick you while you’re down. Too harsh? Well, I’m sorry to say that at times this is a brutal reality. And even if there’s no malice involved there's always competition. Who will your potential customers or clients spend their hard earned money with? Someone that doesn’t believe wholeheartedly in what they create or sell. No, of course not! If you don’t believe in yourself no one else will.

Regrets are painful, try to avoid them.

Have you ever read Bronnie Ware's book, Top Five Regrets of the Dying? Not to get too morbid on you, but these are beautiful lessons from people during their final days of life that we should pay attention to.

The number one regret that people report is, “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me”.

Can you imagine going through life living the way other people believed was right for you? Stifling your own beliefs, your own dreams or ideas? Sadly, many people do this! Belief in yourself and your vision is what leads to the greatest levels of success and satisfaction in life and business.

Find the courage to believe that you can have the life and business of your dreams. I promise you won’t regret it!

People need what you have to offer.

You better believe that your business matters! There are people out there that need what you have to offer!

Whatever it is that you do, if you do it well you are serving others through your gifts and talents. Your belief in what you offer is what breathes life into what you do.

This famous quote from Martin Luther King Jr. sums it up nicely.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”

Believe in your product and service fully so you can offer it up to the world. You may just have the solution to someone’s problem, a service that helps them, a product that brings them enjoyment, a food that nourishes their family or some form of art that entertains and inspires. These are things that the world can benefit from and your belief in yourself and your business is how you can share your gifts with us!

In business, it doesn’t matter if people deserve what you have to offer. It doesn’t matter if you deserve to succeed. What matters is that you believe. Believe in yourself, believe in your business, believe in your ideas. That’s what’s important.

Wonder Woman taught me that :)
